The Yarmouth Mariners have made some trades that involve the team’s back up goalie and two players, including a player who hails from Shelburne County.

With the league’s first trade deadline approaching this Saturday, the Mariners have traded Brendan Nickerson of Cape Sable Island, along with Ryan Groom, to the Bridgewater Lumberjacks for a 5th round pick obtained from Pictou County and future considerations.

Nickerson had been a territorial pick for the Mariners heading into this season, after he had been drafted in the QMJHL. In 16 games the defenceman had gotten one assist from the blue line for the Mariners. Nickerson was recently named to Team Atlantic in the under-17 hockey challenge along with Mariners teammate Morgan Messenger.

Like Nickerson, Groom was also playing his first season with the Mariners this year. In 19 games he had one goal and three assists.

With Travis Wilkins still their main starting goalie, the Mariners have traded backup goalie Maxxim Feener to the Metro Shipbuilders for a 7th round pick in the 2013 draft obtained earlier from Pictou County. The Mariners have obtained the rights to 18-year-old goaltender Brock Crossthwaite from the Hawkesbury Hawks of the CCHL in Ontario who has a 3-4 record this season with a .911 save percentage.

The recent trades by the Mariners come on the heels of a trade that saw Woodstock Slammers players Ben MacSwain and Nick Lindstrom join Yarmouth in exchange for Kraig Pasher and a 3rd round pick in 2013 draft.
