High winds and high tides could bring trouble for Nova Scotia residents along the Bay of Fundy.

Environment Canada has shifted it's earlier alert, which was for the southwest and Atlantic coasts of the province, to cover only the counties around the bay: Yarmouth, Digby, Annapolis, Kings, Hants, Cumberland and Colchester.

The Oct. 9 special weather statement warns that high tides and moderate to strong southwesterly winds will produce higher than normal water levels along the Fundy coastline Oct. 9 and 10.  Rough and pounding surf can also be expected at times over areas exposed to the west and southwest. Winds are expected diminish over these areas on Oct. 10.

According to Robin Tress, coastal adaptation coordinator with the Ecology Action Centre in Halifax, the Oct. 9 tide marks an extreme that could become the new normal around the Gulf of Maine.

“These ‘king tides’ give us a preview of heights that typical tides will likely reach in coming years.”

There is a photo contest, organized by the EAC and several other groups interested in the environment of the Gulf of Maine, on the topic of the Oct. 9 "king tide."  Read more about the competition here.
