Julie Walters, employer engagement specialist with Nova Scotia Works, says the goal for event organizers was to attract local employers who had immediate vacancies.
“We didn’t want to bring in employers that would require people to move away or to travel like two hours a day to reach them,” she said.
The fair will be held 3:30 – 7 p.m. in the gym. Visitors on site will have the added benefit of an area referred to as the “hub”, to be staffed by career practitioners.
Job seekers can receive additional support from these assistants in several ways.
Applicants with a resume can receive helpful tips on it after a free review.
Those who may be nervous to talk to an employer can practise their intro or answers with a career practitioner. Job seekers can also use computers/printers for extra resume copies.
The hub is also a place where employers can conduct interviews or an in-depth private conversation.
Applicants who may have lower levels of literacy can receive assistance from career practitioners to complete forms.
“We’ve really set it up to support the job seekers to be successful and the employers in finding the right candidates,” said Walters.
In addition to employers, Nova Scotia Works will be there to talk about how it supports job seekers; Employment Nova Scotia will have information on wage subsidies; NSCC Burridge and Université Sainte-Anne will have information about training programs.
Job seekers are asked to register when they arrive and will receive a swag bag.
“Bring a resume and bring your smile. Be ready to meet with potential employers,” said Walters.
