One man was airlifted to Halifax and another taken to Yarmouth hospital after both sustained serious injuries in a single-vehicle ATV collision in Smith’s Cove.
The accident happened on East Old Post Road at 10:36 a.m on July 12. Digby RCMP responded immediately, with assistance from Smith’s Cove Volunteer Department and Emergency Health Services.
Constable Colin Helm with Digby RCMP said the investigation is ongoing because the specific factors causing the accident remain unknown.
“We don’t know who the driver was and we still don’t know what led to the accident,” said Helm.
A portion of East Old Post road was closed after the accident as an RCMP collision analyst was called to further inspect the scene.
Helm said this is to help determine the accident’s cause and that, “we call these specialists down because they can tell a lot more about a scene than we can.”
“Was the vehicle a factor? The road? Could alcohol have played a role? These are the things that we cannot assume, that we still have to figure out,” he said.
After both sustaining serious injuries, the two men involved in the accident, ages 26 and 50, were taken to hospital.
The 26-year-old was taken by a LifeFlight jet to Halifax and the 50-year-old to Yarmouth by ambulance.
