YARMOUTH, N.S. – A 32-year-old Pembroke, Yarmouth County man has been arrested and is facing a charge of attempted murder and numerous other firearms charges after what RCMP say was an early morning shooting in Yarmouth County.
According to the RCMP, prior to 1 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4, the Yarmouth Rural RCMP, assisted by Yarmouth Town RCMP, Western Traffic Services, and Yarmouth Clare Street Crime Enforcement Unit (SCEU), responded to a 911 call of a man having been shot at a residence on the Pembroke Road in Pembroke, Yarmouth County.
On Sunday morning, Nov. 5, the RCMP said that Nicholas Ashton Mullen of Pembroke has been charged with attempted murder with a firearm, careless use of a firearm, pointing a firearm and discharging a firearm with intent. Mullen has been remanded in to custody and will appear in Yarmouth Provincial Court on Monday, Nov. 6.
(NOTE: The RCMP had previously reported it was a Digby County man who was facing charges. They have since corrected this to say Mullen is from Yarmouth County.)
Corporal Dal Hutchinson, a media relations officer with the Nova Scotia RCMP, said the 911 call was placed from the residence.
According to an RCMP media release, upon arrival officers located a 38-year-old man from Yarmouth County outside of the residence who was suffering from a gunshot wound. The man was transported to the Yarmouth Regional hospital, where he was later transported by EHS Lifeflight to the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax with life-threatening injuries.
Cpl. Hutchinson said Sunday morning an update from the night before was that "his condition has not changed from life-threatening."
He remained at the QEII hospital.
Mullen was arrested at the scene without incident. He remained in police custody on all day Saturday afternoon, with the RCMP saying early on he would be facing charges for attempted murder and other firearm related offences.
The RCMP say the victim and accused were known to each other. A third man at the residence is not facing any charges. Cpl. Hutchinson said there were no other injuries other than to the person who was transported to hospital.
The investigation is continuing with assistance from the Yarmouth Clare SCEU and the RCMP Forensic Identification Section.
