Committee member Charles Crosby made the presentations to the Canadian Mental Health Association, the Tri-County Pregnancy Centre, Southwest Early Childhood Intervention and Camp Peniel.

Co-chairs Peter and Mary Eldridge made a few simple requests during the event – first asking recipients to spread the word about the Yarmouth Area Community Fund.

“If you tell even just one person… if word gets around more, then the more people we approach with our little tin cup, they’ll be more willing to give because they will know a little bit more about it,” said Peter.

Mary Eldridge urged the recipients to take a picture of how they would be using the funds, to help promote the grant’s usefulness.

The Tri-County Pregnancy Centre will be preparing more kits for new mothers and babies.

The local chapter of the Canadian Mental Health Association will be spreading more awareness about mental health by purchasing talking sticks for distribution to local schools.

The funds will be used towards kitchen renovations at Camp Peniel and the Southwest Early Childhood Intervention is planning on purchasing furniture for a new office location.

The Yarmouth Area Community Fund was created in 2008 under an umbrella organization – the Community Foundation of Nova Scotia.

Its goal is to improve quality of life by supporting the social needs and broad interests of the area, including education, culture, the arts, health, heritage, sport, recreation, the environment, people in need, and other touchstones of the community.

The Fund typically distributes at least 3.5 per cent annually to local charities. That amount has increased in recent years because of a higher return on investments.

The organization also handles flow-through grants for benefactors who want to give money to a charity anonymously or to help promote the Fund.

In its first year, the organization distributed a total of $1,200 between HOPE, VON and the Yarmouth Junior High Home and School association.

For Yarmouth’s 250th anniversary a flow through grant of four $250 allotments was distributed, as well as four computers.

Other charities that have benefitted include the Gilles Boudreau Fund, Yarmouth Food Bank, Yarmouth Special Olympics, Salvation Army Yarmouth Corps, Friends of the Light and YMCA.

The Fund is now in excess of $100,000.

“The more we can get, the more we can give from the organization,” said Mary Eldridge.“By the end of this year we will have given 30 grants (close to $12,000 in total).”
