The second SWITCH event is hitting Main Street on Aug. 28 from 12-4 p.m. This one will include a Summer Beach Party theme.

The SWITCH event involves giving the street to the people. There will be activities and vendors set up on Main Street, which during the event will be closed to vehicular traffic.

There was overwhelming positive reaction to the first SWITCH event that was held in June, both from participants and the public.

“We’ve had most of the vendors that participated last time sign up and we’ve got new people who want to participate and be part of it, so we’re pretty excited about that,” says Caroline Robertson, the town’s Director of Planning.

The town’s planning department and Yarmouth Recreation are the departments that organize the SWITCH events.

“Recreation is planning some themed activities around the summer beach party theme. We got a bunch of donations from different businesses for beach balls and water balloons, and that kind of stuff,” Robertson says. “People love these events.”

There are two more SWITCH events planned after this one.

On Sunday, Sept 25 there will be a Battle of the Bands event and on Sunday, Oct. 30 the theme will be Halloween Harvest.

“The Battle of the Bands, I’m really excited about. Wade Cleveland offered to run the Battle of the Bands portion and Tusket Ford is sponsoring it and there is actually a prize for some recording time,” Robertson says. “We’ll have scheduled bands playing all day, which is going to be awesome.”

For the October event, there will be pumpkin carving happening on the street and organizers will be encouraging kids to come in costume. Adults, of course, can too.

During the SWITCH events, Main Street is closed to traffic between Cliff and Parade Streets. Aside from creating a fun family activity, the event is also aimed at bringing people into the downtown on a day that is traditionally a less-busy shopping day.

Set up on SWITCH day happens from 11 a.m. to noon and cleanup is 4-5 p.m. Other information about the event can be found on the town’s website.

“We’re excited and we hope we have even more people show up this time,” Robertson says. She says two young musicians who were busking during the last SWITCH event had made about $400 that day.

“That’s just an example how its good for local people when they’re out doing these things,” she says. “And a lot of businesses had people buying their products. Some were doing sidewalk sales and did really well and enjoyed it. A lot of businesses are planning different things with the new event to bring people into their shops as well.”
