Agropur and Farmers Dairy merged last spring. The new business will be focusing on distribution and Dairy Treat in Dayton is being put up for sale.

The Dairy Treat property in Dayton will soon be up for sale and the owners wouldn’t mind seeing it go to a buyer that will continue dishing out ice cream treats.

The merger of Farmer’s Dairy with Agropur last spring has resulted in the discontinuation of retail businesses.

“We’re not that much into retail and operating stores,” said Marc Labelle public relations and communications director for Agropur.

The Yarmouth Dairy Treat has been operating for more than 50 years according to some residents.

“Dairy Treat is a rendezvous for many locals and we would like to see it live through it (the transition),” said Labelle.

He added that should the property not sell immediately, it would reopen this spring and operate until it is sold.

Agropur announced that the Shelburne Dairy Treat would also not be opening its doors this spring to the public, but as since reversed its decision.

The Dairy Treat was there long before the late '70s. The late '50s or early '60s would be a more accurate estimate. It opened when Superior Ice and Dairy was still operating in Milton.

Shame these outside companies come in, buy out our local businesses, then close down parts of it and/or revamp what obviously has been a successful business for years!
