Yarmouth Vikings miss championship game of Glen Murray hockey tournament by 3.2 seconds

YARMOUTH – After finishing first in their division, and first overall in the 10-team round robin, the Yarmouth Vikings were just 3.2 seconds away from the championship game of the Glen Murray Invitational High School Hockey Tournament in Bridgewater. They never made it to the final.

With one of the Vikings players in the penalty box, and their opponent’s net empty for the extra attacker, the Barrington Barons tied the semi-final game 3-3 with 3.2 seconds remaining in the game.

The game went to double overtime with the Barons taking the 4-3 win.

As it turned out, winning the championship game wasn’t going to be easy for either the Barons or the West Kings Wolverines. After a tie at the end of regulation, these two teams also battled it out in double overtime, with West Kings scoring the winning goals with 37 seconds remaining in the second OT.

West Kings had advanced to the championship after a 2-1 win over East Hants in the other semi-final game.

The Vikings had won their first two games of the tournament with a 9-2 victory over Digby and a 4-3 win over Eastern Shore.

The last of their round robin games was played against the Par-en-Bas Sharks, who at that point had two losses in the round robin – an 8-0 loss to Eastern Shore and an 8-2 loss to East Hants.

In this last round robin game for both Yarmouth County high schools, PEB jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period, but the Vikings managed to tie the game 3-3 before the period ended. Par-en-Bas then doubled their lead to 6-3 at the end of the second. The Vikings tied the game 6-6 in the third period. The tie guaranteed Yarmouth’s spot in the semi-finals.

The following are the division standings and results at the end of the Nov. 13-14 round robin. In addition to points for wins and ties, the tournament also awarded points per period for ties or the team that scored the most goals.
