On May 9, 1992 at 5:20 a.m., the Westray mine in Plymouth exploded, killing 26 miners. May 9 marked the thirty-second anniversary of the disaster. Wreaths were laid at the foot of the monument to remember the lives of the miners who died early that morning. In the inquiry following the disaster, significant changes were made in the form of more robust regulations and safety requirements.
